Our Recommendations:

We have 3 suggestions, each with its pros and cons.

Quickest - After arriving in San Jose, take a Sansa (www.flysansa.com) single-engine commuter flight to Quepos. They run frequently and run around $49 each way. Now, be aware that the road from the airport to Paradise Breezes is gravel, with one-lane bridges - so be prepared for a Third World ride. Total travel time: Air 20 minutes; Ground approximately 60 minutes.

Best, But Limited - If the flight frequency to Palmar Sur were the same as to Quepos, this would be the way to go. Unfortunately, there's only 1 flight a dayon both Sansa (www.flysansa.com) and Nature Air (www.natureair.com) , too early in the morning to connect from most international arrivals. The drive from Palmar Sur is stunning - rocky coast, ocean views - and the coastal highway is first-rate. You only have to drive on the gravel road for 3 miles. But if you can make the connection, or want to overnight in San Jose and take the morning flight, this is your best option. You are able to return to San Jose from this airport and connect to most US international flights on the same day (the flight departs Palmar Sur at 10:25am arriving San Jose at 11:05am). Cost - Approximately $75 each way. Total travel time: Air: 40 minutes; Ground 45 minutes.

Most Scenic - If you like long leisurely drives through the mountains, you've come to the right country. The roads are in good shape, but plan on 4 ½ to 5 ½ hours depending on the time and day you are traveling. You'll enjoy a beautiful scenic drive through 10,000 + foot mountains. A must-do in at least one direction if you want to see the beautiful vistas, so if you arrive too late for the morning Palmar Sur flight, and have the patience for a long drive, chauffeured through magnificent terrain, you will be well rewarded. (Our driver's van can seat 10 adults but is most comfortable for parties of 6 or fewer.)
